DAVID LIVELY A Franco-American pianist, David Lively is a prize-winner at major international competitions (Long-Thibaud, Queen Elisabeth, Geneva, and the Tchaikovsky Competition, where he won the Special Prize for Contemporary Music as well as La Scala’s Dino Ciani Prize). He performs as a soloist with numerous orchestras under the baton of eminent conductors such as Erich Leinsdorf, Michael Gielen, Kurt Sanderling, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Colin Davis, Rafael Kubelik, Pascal Rophé, Michael Tilson Thomas, Kent Nagano, and Dennis Russell Davies. Possessing an exceptionally broad repertoire as both a soloist and chamber musician, David Lively has recorded monumental and rarely performed works, such as Busoni’s Concerto for Piano, Orchestra, and Male Chorus under Michael Gielen, and the concertos of Joseph Marx under Steven Sloane.

He is also a passionate advocate of contemporary music. His close ties with many composers have led him to record the complete piano works of Philippe Boesmans and to give the European premieres of Takemitsu’s *Riverrun*, Saariaho’s trio *Cendres*, and concertos by William Blank—specifically *Cris* and, more recently, *Reflecting Black*. The latter was commissioned by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and recorded under the direction of Pascal Rophé; the work was inspired by the art of Soulages and dedicated to Lively. Deeply interested in French music from the turn of the 20th century, he is a member of the Academy of French Music at the École Normale.

His recordings include Fauré’s *Nocturnes*; chamber music collaborations featuring the sonatas of Fauré, Debussy, and Ravel with violinist Tatiana Samouil; and the complete works for violin and piano by Ravel with violinist Elsa Grether. A former student of Jules Gentil at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, David Lively served as the school’s Director of Competitions for 15 years and teaches within its "Vocations" program. He is regularly invited to serve on the juries of major international competitions. His extensive discography, acclaimed by the French and international press, reflects the diversity of his repertoire and his deep connection to the musical heritage of his two home countries: France and the United States. A socially committed artist, he is a founding member of the Association of Artists for Peace.
